World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15
Senior living advocates and others honor World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 to recognize the importance of raising awareness of this issue.
Approximately one in 10 Americans aged 60 and over have experienced some form of elder abuse, according to the National Center on Elder Abuse, with other data showing that only one in 14 cases of this abuse reported to authorities. In almost 90 percent of elder abuse and neglect incidents, the perpetrator is a family member, according to the National Council on Aging.
Elder financial abuse may be the most common type of elder abuse, and is reported to cost older Americans nearly $3 billion annually. The National Center on Elder Abuse offers tools and tips, events and news about World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

Increased training and education to prevent, identify and report suspected elder abuse is critical to resident safety. New York and Illinois recently introduced legislation that would help prevent cases of elder abuse.
