Study: Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Adults

by Administrator
(Littleton)

The Institute of Medicine has released a brief about meeting the dietary needs of older adults, examining the need for new paradigms to meet their needs and by examining the meaning of “healthy aging.”

The brief summarizes a meeting late last year of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Food and Nutrition Board convened to examine physical, social and environmental factors affecting the ability of older adults to meet their dietary needs.

Researchers discussed the evolution of attempts to define “healthy aging,” noting that over the past 50 years it has evolved from one focused on the absence of diseases and disability to one that includes psycho social domains and reflect well-being from the point of view of older adults. They also discuss how age-related changes influence the requirements for various nutrients.
